Barry J. Toby
After 40 years serving the legal community and over 25 years of practice with Steve Sherman, Barry Toby has retired from private practice. Barry is, and has always been, a valuable mentor, and he will be greatly missed. We remain available to assist you with your legal needs, including business transactions (acquisitions), and business formation (corporations, partnerships, LLC's). Mr. Sherman received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley and his law degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. He was admitted to practice in California in 1988 and has been associated with the firm since 1993. Mr. Sherman's practice focuses on business and real estate. He assists his clients in litigation (in State and Federal Court) and ADR (alternate dispute resolution), such as mediation and arbitration. Mr. Sherman is also licensed to practice law in Texas.
Mr. Maruyama received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and his law degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. He was admitted to practice in California in 1988 and became Of Counsel with the firm in 2014. Mr. Maruyama's practice focuses on Energy Law, Real Estate and Corporate Transactions. He assists his clients in real estate land title rights, commercial and residential transactions and general corporate governance and due diligence.
James H. (Jim) Gulseth was born and attended high school in Devils Lake, North Dakota and graduated with an A.B. degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
Jim earned his JD degree at the University of California Hastings School of Law in San Francisco and is admitted to practice in the State of California and before the Federal District Court, Northern District of California, and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit.
He is a member of the Corporations, Business Transactions, Securities and Tax and Intellectual Property Sections of the State Bar of California. Jim’s reported cases include PACKER TRANSPORTATION CO v. USA, 596 F.2d 891; PLATTS v. SACRAMENTO NORTHERN RAILWAY, 253 Cal. Rptr. 269, 205 Cal. App. 3d 1025. Jim has assisted hundreds of business start ups, including many significant start-ups such as Pleasanton’s Phosistor Technologies, Inc., that raised over $15 million in Series A and B offerings.
Robert L. (Bob) Taylor was born near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and attended high school in Berkeley, California. Bob graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with high honors from the University of California at Berkeley in 1982 with an A.B. degree in Economics.
Bob graduated from the Boalt Hall School of Law (UC Berkeley) in 1985, where he was a member of the California Law Review. In 1985, he was admitted to practice in the State of California and before the Federal District Court, Northern District of California, and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit. He has since also been admitted to practice before the Federal District Court, Central District of California and Northern District of Illinois, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals, Federal Circuit.
Bob is a member of the Business Transactions, Real Estate, Litigation, and Intellectual Property Sections of the State Bar of California.
Each of us at Sherman Law Offices is committed to the concept of "giving back" to the community. We are each involved in many different activities which help to make our communities a better place in which to live and work.
One way in which we have become involved is through our participation in Rotary International.Each of us is a member of a different club. Barry Toby is a member of the San Ramon Rotary Club.
And Steve Sherman is a member of the Pleasanton-North Rotary Club.
In commenting upon his community involvement, Barry Toby says, "You get out far more than you put in. You get the satisfaction of helping those in need. And in the process, you build strong friendships with the other people who work on the projects with you." The firm is also a member of the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce and the San Ramon Chamber of Commerce.
